A fan writes about her reading “A Hebraic Obsession experience:
Mort… finally after how long? It’s been a difficult two years since my mom past and my world changed forever. I wanted to tell you I read your book! I spent two weeks in Petoskey , Michigan at my brother’s and sister in-law’s home on Crooked Lake. They’re kind of intellectual snobs and don’t watch TV, nothing wrong with either… they read. So I was glad I took your book, which I ordered through Amazon (not autographed *:( sad). I’ll tell you, I didn’t cry until the last chapter. What a great story. I related to it so much, having been in the same time period and experienced much of what you did growing up. You son is right… “Life is one fucking miracle”. I’m not sure how you were able to turn a book about such a tragic historic event into a “feel good” book, but I felt much better about myself as a person and how I view things after reading your book.

So… I guess I was a shiksa? What did you say in your first response to me, I was a good looking Patty who could hold her liqueur! LOL. The story of “South of the Border”, how funny. Been through there and experienced it myself a few times. I drove it when it was still all the old highway. I remember one time, five of us from NJ college, went for Spring Break and broke down in Dillon, So. Carolina. It was 1970. WOW! The fat good ol’ boy owner had a spittoon next to his desk. Feet up… I guess his aim wasn’t too good, ’cause there was spittle all down the wall. It was the Saturday before Easter Sunday and they were closed, but to his joy, he got to call his “n—– mechanic” to work. I felt so bad for that guy, the boss called him “n—— boy” and worse. On our return trip from Florida we left the mechanic a couple of big bags of oranges and grapefruit on his porch (he wasn’t home). We knew where he lived, ’cause while he worked on our car, he sent us over to his house (shanty) and his wife cooked for us. It was an experience.

I took notes while reading the book. One day I’ll share more. I wanted to get this off too you, it’s been a month since I read the book and was excited to let you know. Let me know if you receive this, my friend said some of my mail was going to spam on her computer. Take care.

“The Stairs” Wins #18

I love emails that start with the words, “Fantastic News!!! Your project is an official selection of the Bloodstained Indie Film Festival…

I love film festivals from Long Beach, California that care. Here is their statement:

When you make an indie film, you put your blood, sweat, and tears into it. Not to mention, your bank account. No one understands this better than us. We’re independent filmmakers just like you, and we’re here to honor your passion, commitment, and vision.

So many people give up on their dreams, never daring to try to make them come true. You’re one of the brave few to take a huge step and actually do that. No film is perfect but you had the guts to reach for the stars and we want to applaud your success. Production date, world premiere status, etc. None of that junk matters to us. We just want to see your pride and joy.

“The Stairs” has now reached 18 wins and has gained the right to vote, sign a contracts and most importantly to drink. So we raise our alcohol-laden glasses and toast, BIFF for honoring passion, commitment and vision. You have succeeded. See our pride and joy!

Goose Bumps—A Mort Laitner Vignette

Goose Bumps— A Mort Laitner Vignette

I know you have had goose bumps. Those tiny bumps on your skin usually found on your arms or your neck or in both regions at the same time. Yup those bumps housed next to every hair follicle on the back of your neck or on the topside of your arm. They appeared when you were cold or frightened. Sometimes they were accompanied with shivers or tremors as if it earthquake possessed your body.

I remembered getting goose bumps as a child, when I saw a horror movie. But I can not recall the last time I had them.

So when Donald of the Soref JCC commented, “You know that after I saw The Stairs for the second time, I got goose bumps.”

“Wow Donald, that’s high praise. You’ve proven the awesome power of movies,” I replied.

“Yup your movie was quite powerful.”

“Donald you know I have attended nine screening of the film and your the first person to tell me that they got goose bumps. I have seen tears in viewer’s eyes and I have heard them express the how the film made them feel but never goose bumps.”

But on each of those nine showing complete silence the permeated every pore of the theater. The audience inhaled and exhaled as if they had one set of lungs. No coughs. No sneezes.  Just holy silence as if Heaven fell quiet. The silence that follows the ending an epic movie.”

As he digested my flowerily words, Donald smiled and tried not to laugh.

But I knew The Stairs had elicited another strong visceral reaction. Chemicals from Donald’s brain flowed through his nervous system which prompted every tiny arm and neck hair to stand at attention as goose bumps arose as if mountains forming after an earthquake.

I was proud.
