On the Road with Healthy Stories
Miami-Dade County’s Public Health journal, “Healthy Stories”, has had an active month with three educational engagements. Mort Laitner spoke to over two hundred sixth grade students at Brownsville Middle School. He spoke to the students about sanitary nuisances, rabies, using Healthy Stories such as, “The Rat Lady”, “The Best Laid Plans”, “Oh Rats!”, and our cougar story.
Carolle Lafrance, a teacher at the school, sent an e-mail to Mr. Laitner which said, “It was a pleasure to receive you at Brownsville Middle School. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking time out to educate our students. Your Healthy Stories books are very precious to some of our students. I have placed a couple of them in the school library, to give the seventh and eighth grade students a chance to read them. Hope to see and hear you speak again…. Thank you very much for all you did for us.”
Mort Laitner attended an FIU writer’s symposium on Hutchinson Island to recruit writers and improve their own literary skills.
The third event was at Sleepless Nights on Miami Beach. Sleepless Nights is an event that commences at 6 p.m. and runs through 7 a.m. with 150 free arts and entertainment events, over 100,000 people participate in this annual event. At Books & Books, Mr. Laitner enthralled an audience of over 100 by reading his story, “The Stairs” (see photo). “The Stairs” is available online at: www.healthystories.net .
