Who Says It Can’t Happen Here

Wednesday, November 6, 2024 — One day after the presidential election

I sat in front of my desktop with my eyes fixated on the screen.

My roller-coaster emotions climbed to the heights of elation and then careened to the depths of fear as I scanned the headlines in the New York Times:

Biden Wins Election by Landslide

Captures Popular Vote and Electoral College

Trump Refuses to Concede — Claims Election Rigged and Stolen

Threatens: A Bloody Civil War Unless Biden Vacates the White House Immediately

I shut my eyes as rapid-fire questions shot across my mind:

Is this guy nuts?

Doesn’t he know the outcome of the last Civil War?

Doesn’t he know how many people died?

Doesn’t he care about human lives?

Doesn’t he care about America?

I thought, “Stupid questions, you already know the answers to all of those questions.”

Then I recalled how Lincoln’s electoral victory in 1860 triggered the Civil War.

I rested my head between my hands, peeking through my fingers at the words “Civil War” and asked:

Is this the beginning of the end?

Will history repeat itself?

Were we really on the precipice of a civil war?

Was it safe to drive to my Publix to buy groceries for my trip up North?

What should I do?

Where should I go?

When should I leave?

Who should I text?

Who should I call?

Who should I take?

Why didn’t I write an Emergency Evacuation Plan?

Do I have enough cash for such a long trip?

What valuables should I take?

Where should I hide the valuables I can’t take?

On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, I sat in my Florida home having decided to wait, to take my chances and to hope for the best.

Boy was I wrong!

Oh so terribly wrong!

So now I sat hunched over my desk, with my eyes shut, my chin cradled in my hands and my prayers for peace on my lips.

I sat paralyzed as my eyes fixated on every word found on the front page of the Times.

I studied each word or phrase as if  they were written on a holy parchment scroll.

My hands trembled and my tears clouded my vision, as I read:

Nation in Crisis” States Commence Seceding from Union

Since the former president’s clarion cry of rebellion the following state legislatures with the approval of their governors have seceded from the Union: Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, North Dakota and Montana.

Governors from the aforementioned states have posted armed National Guard Troops, state police and Posse Comitias at their state’s borders to impede an invasion by the US Army.

More states expected to follow suit in the next few weeks.

Violence, Mayhem and Death Breaks Out Across Nation

Protesters in Southern states shot in the streets. Many reported dead and wounded including CNN and MSNBC reporters

Across the South, white hooded  members of the KKK set numerous fires to Black churches, synagogues and homes of Democratic officials. The Klan left burnt crosses on the lawns of these properties as their calling cards. Many members of local law enforcement stood back and watched the destruction.

Outside of public libraries in Greensboro, North Carolina, Nashville, Tennessee, Tallahassee, Florida and Montgomery, Alabama gun-toting right-wing militias broke down the doors of  libraries. They pulled preselected books off of their shelves and created 10 foot-high piles. They poured gasoline on the books, then threw lit matches onto these literary funeral pyres.

As I studied the photo of the mountain of burning books and I recalled Heinrich Heine’s quote, “Where they burn books they will ultimately burn people.”

Remembering Nazi Germany, I felt like vomiting but I continued to read.

Random Acts of Violence including rape and battery occur throughout NYC, Los Angeles and Atlanta

Looting and Riots breakout across the Nation

Police Recommend all Citizens carry weapons when they leave their homes as a means of self defense

Abortion Clinics Bombed Across the Nation

Private armed security guards posted in front of many clinics.

Reports of shootouts occurring in front of numerous clinics.

Many abortion clinics shutter their doors

As I studied the photo of a completely demolished clinic in Athens, Georgia,  I wept.

All Highways North Congested for Miles—Filled with Fleeing Refugees

Security experts recommend hunkering down and not traveling during this time of crisis

Pelosi Demands Liz and Vice President Cheney be Released from “Protective Custody” in Montana

I wondered, “Who would be the next famous person to be arrested or murdered?”

As I felt sick, I walked toward the bathroom and realized:

“I have to leave.

I have to pack up my bags and get out of the South immediately?

My window of opportunity is closing?”

But questions continued to plague me:

Could I join one of those caravans?

Would they accept me?

How safe will it be to drive up North as Southern states abandon the Union?

Should I drive on I-95 or US 1?

Will I be able to fill up my gas tank or will the pumps run dry?

Will I be stranded or even killed in the South?

Should I take my .22 caliber rifle, my 410 shotgun and my Smith and Wesson 45?

How many miles is it to the Mason-Dixon line?

And finally, how could this have happened to the country I love?

I turned off my desktop and headed to the bedroom to pack.

  1. I’d rather think of America this way: AMERICA TO ME THE HOUSE I LIVE IN (1947) What is America to me? A name, a map or a flag I see, A certain word, “Democracy”, What is America to me? The house I live in, The friends that I have found, The folks beyond the railroad and the people all around, The worker and the farmer, the sailor on the sea, The men who built this country, that’s America to me. The words of old Abe Lincoln, of Jefferson and Paine, of Washington and Jackson and the tasks that still remain. The little bridge at Concord,  where Freedom’s Fight began, of Gettysburg and Midway  and the story of Bataan. The house I live in, my neighbors White and Black, the people who just came here  or from generations back, the town hall and the soapbox, the torch of Liberty, a home for all God’s children, that’s America to me. The house I live in, the goodness everywhere, a land of wealth and beauty  with enough for all to share. A house that we call “Freedom”, the home of Liberty, but especially the people, that’s America to me. But especially the people–that’s  the true America… By Lewis Allan LET’S ALL HOPE AND PRAY THAT THIS IS THE VISION OF AMERICA THAT WILL PERSIST.—M. Rosenthal

When Fascism Comes to America—A Poem

Published Post author

In the 1930’s, the quote, “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross” was attributed to Sinclair Lewis but he didn’t write it.

Today, the author of that quote still remains unknown.

But many authors have modified the quote and made it their own.

So I decided to take a poetic swing at it.

When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in holy cloth around a blonde bimbo’s butt

A derriere as white as cream or fresh fallen snow

Captured by a holy cloth miniskirt

Leaving little to the imagination

But upon closer examination, the cheeks are tattooed:

This White Butt Belongs to

The Christian Nationalist Party

When fascism comes to America it will appear as a redhead wearing a red, white and blue tie dye bandana, Daisy Dukes, a blue cotton gingham blouse and a belly button ring.

A redhead owning a Pepsodent smile

And two fraktur-fonted tattoos:

Trump

Won

The bandana almost completely covers the ginger’s forehead

but around its edges you can see fading bruises from the night before

The knotted blouse exposes her white bra and a pierced innie

And her thread-bare short shorts embroidered with 6 small yellow stars.

When fascism comes to America it will  be dressed as a brunette, wearing MAGA hat and waving a Bible

A brunette behind the wheel of her truck, as the traffic signal switches from yellow to red

The brunette floors her F-150 causing two large flags hanging off of the truck’s rear end to stand at attention

Confederate

Old Glory

Her Ford bares a red, white and blue bumper sticker reading:

Convert or Leave

When fascism comes to America it will be as easy to see

On their bumper stickers, hats, flags and asses

24. We have achieved diversity in a US political party. We now have a Republican political party composed of a diverse collection of corrupt wackos, crackpots, yahoo’s, the intellectually challenge, the morally corrupt, racists, white supremacists, neo-nazis, antisemites, and any other scum of the earth you can find.

It has been more than 18 months since Trump has left the WH, but the stench of his corruption remains as potent as ever. And Republicans pledge their allegiance neither to flag nor country, but to a man who pathologically  cares only about himself.

The Republican (GQP) party of inrellectually disgusting people is led by a man who represents the greatest threat to democracy in our history.

I keep quiet around here because every 10 year old has a gun. God help us.

MTG Wants A Nationalistic Christian Nation

Published Post author

We find ourselves noshing in the same kosher pizzeria where Nachman Mostofsky took Marjorie Taylor Greene on her tour of Jewish neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Long Island.

We’re interviewing Nachman on his thoughts about the Congresswoman’s call for the Republican party to become a  Christian nationalistic party.

Reporter: Nachman, before we start the interview, may I turn on my tape recorder?

Nachman: No problem.

Reporter: Thanks. How’s your brother doing in jail?

Nachman: He’s coping. He says he’s had better kosher food and some of the prisoners are threatening him because he’s wearing his yarmulke. He’s promised my dad that he wouldn’t participate in any future insurrections.

Reporter: Well, at least some of his news is good to hear. But today, I’m here to interview you on your thoughts concerning MTG’s statement.

I’m sure you’ve heard it but please allow me to read it to you.

“We need to be the party of nationalism and I’m a Christian and I say it proudly, we should be Christian nationalists.”

Nachman: First, let me say that statement surprised me. When I took Marjorie on my tour of a yeshiva, a matzah bakery and this kosher supermarket and pizzeria, I said, “She’s nothing but a friend and ally for our Orthodox Jewish community.” I added, “Marjorie is against government interference in our lives, she’s for religious freedom and we both share what is commonly called, Judeo-Christian values.”

Today, I’m concerned that I made a big mistake. I should never taken her here.

Some of my Orthodox brothers have warned me that Marjorie wants us Jews to put away our menorahs and place Christmas trees in our living rooms. While others have whispered, “We’re going to have to attend church services every Sunday.”

Reporter: That’s pretty scary stuff.

It sounds like Marjorie wants the government to interfere in our Jewish lives. That her values may now be purely Christian.

Nachman, you’ll be free to practice any religion as long as its Christianity.

Nachman: But what really frightened me was when I received a copy of the New Testament, —King James version— and a gold crucifix on a silver chain in the mail.

Reporter: Was that a gift from Marjorie?

Nachman: I don’t know. It didn’t come with a card or a note and the return address was from some church in Alabama.

Reporter: What did you do with the Bible and the cross?

Nachman: I brought them to a nearby church and gave them to a priest. He thanked me.

Reporter: Have your friends warned you, that in the future kosher foods and circumcision may be outlawed if we become a nationalist Christian nation?

Nachman: No, but I’ve thought about it.

Reporter: Do you have a message you want to send to the American Jewish community based upon your efforts?

Nachman: Yes, I made a terrible mistake. I tried tikkum olam with Mrs. Greene. I wanted to repair her anti-Semitic world; I failed miserably.

I want to warn the whole Orthodox community that their actions have consequences. We Orthodox Jews better think about the repercussions we cause upon ourselves the next time we go out to vote.

Reporter: Nachman, thanks for allowing me to interview you and for this delicious tasting pizza. I’m now going to turn off the tape recorder.
