When You’re Hot, You’re Hot—And When You’re Not, Your Not”

By Mort Laitner

Since 1971, I have taken these philosophical words from country-rock singer, Jerry Reed, very seriously. Living in South Florida you have to.

Today, the mercury in my internal thermometer rises and falls when I open emails from film festivals. My mercurial moods can be calibrated by these digital messages. (Old folks, remember as kids when the glass bulb filled with mercury  broke; we played all day with that liquid ball—How are we alive today?)
Well life on  “The Stairs” also has had its ups and downs.

After a hot winning streak in the film festival circuit (12 wins), we went cold for 30 days with 15 losses.

Until yesterday, when the Miami Short Film Festival (now in its 15th year) upgraded our status to semi-finalist. Hopefully, we are climbing out of the  loser rut and onto the finalist rung of the ladder.

Thanks to Miami Shorts my mood swing.

So here is a little plug from Everfest’s Take on the festival:

“As the only short film festival in South Florida, the Miami Short Film Festival is a unique opportunity to explore Miami’s contemporary filmmaking scene. This event gives filmmakers and guests the chance to truly immerse themselves in the world of short filmmaking by organizing seminars and discussion panels where they are able to interact and have their questions answered by industry experts. In addition to the film screenings, guests have the option of going to any one of the cocktail events being hosted in many of Miami’s local restaurants and bars.”

And from Miami Shorts’ website:

Miami Short Film Festival is a film festival based in Miami, Florida that features short films of 20-minutes or less each. A growing movement to exhibit and expand the art form of short film making providing a venue to build community around the arts

Our Philosophy: Short films, past and present, are true works of art, and deserve a venue dedicated to their exhibition. Our mission is to present quality films from around the world as well as support, recognize and honor filmmakers creating a films under 20 minutes.

Finally, we hit a milestone today, This is our 300th blog. Thanks for continuing to read our content.

For the observant, note the bottom of the photo of the thermometer and you’ll see a Jewish star with an “H” centered in the star. I thought how appropriate for the author of “A Hebraic Obsession”.
