Short Story – The Human Condition

“The Human Condition” ~ by Mort Laitner

As a child, I collected coins and stamps.
I hunted and gathered them to make them part of my collection.
I inserted the coins in their designated albums.
I tweezed the stamps above their designated spaces trying hard not to harm their perforated borders.

As an grey-haired man, I collected pills.
I tweezed them between my index finger and thumb before inserting them in my mouth.
I memorized their scientific names, their sizes, their colors as if they were part of my family and as if my life counted on it.
I greeted them in the morning, after meals, or before bed as if they were friends.
My collection grew like kudzu in a yellow and white gingham box.
This box filled with plastic bottles rested next to my refrigerator, whose name I did not know.
But as I read the labels on those plastic bottles, I see the words, “You have entered the sixth stage of life.”
